West Settles into Assistant Principal Position

By Callie Metler-Smith

At last month’s SISD School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Shaun Barnett discussed the need for an at-large assistant principal for the school district, and the school board approved the position. Coach Jeremy West will be filling the position, one that he is very excited about taking on.

West expresses gratitude and excitement when talking about his new position. He will be taking over a lot of the discipline on all three campuses, working most closely with High School Principal Casey Stone. He will also be filling in for the other principals for when they are away from their campus for various meetings.

Coach West grew up in Vernon and played college baseball at the junior college there. He had decided to be a pharmacist and worked in a pharmacy in Vernon for 5 years, but later determined that he wanted to become a coach and teacher. He then earned his undergraduate degree from Midwestern State in Wichita Falls.

West came to Stamford with former Athletic Director Wayne Hutchinson in 2006. He had coached with Hutchinson before and was very excited about becoming a Stamford Bulldog. He took over as offensive coordinator, assistant baseball coach, and Junior High basketball coach. He also taught high school science. Since coming to Stamford, he has earned a master’s degree from Sul Ross in Alpine through a satellite program at Region 14 ESC. He graduated from that program in 2009, but was not in a rush to take an administrative position.

With this new Assistant Principal position, West expresses that he will be able to take on some administration while still keep his love for coaching. He will continue his coaching duties under new AD Ronnie Casey. He says he is very much looking forward to the position and feels he has a good advantage because he already has a relationship with the high school kids and he is also familiar with many of their parents.
