Cloud Seeding Update: First Two Weeks

The Rolling Plains Cloud Seeding Program has flown 10 missions in between the dates of June 21 and July 4th. The Operations summary for those 14 days showed that clouds were seeded in Haskell, Stonewall, and Jones counties. The following weather patterns were documents:

June 21st: Rain showers associated with upper air disturbance formed in the morning hours.

June 22nd: Precipitation along frontal boundary remained to the north of the target area during the day. Large mesoscale convective system moved through the area overnight.

June 23rd: Stationary front stalled in Southern Tx Panhandle with stable cool conditions from previous nights thunderstorm showers. Precipitation remained outside the target area.

June 24th: A complex of showers moved southeast towards the target area. One seeding operation was conducted at cloud base altitude (3500 ft and 22 degrees C).

June 25th: Morning precipitation lingered in the area stabilizing the atmosphere.

June 26th: Precipitation chances lingered with surface moisture in place but no clouds formed.

June 27th: Increasing Pressure and a decrease in surface moisture decreased rain chances.

June 28th: Scattered cumuli formed in the target area but were not conducive to seeding.

June 29th: Large-scale subsidence continued to preclude the formation of deep convection.

June 30th: Upper level ridge dominated leading to unseasonably warm temperatures.

July 1st: A weak front was located in West Central Tx becoming the focus for convection. Two seeding missions were launched on pulsating thunderstorms in Haskell County.

July 2nd: Stationary front was located through the target area and provided focus for convective development. Two seeding missions were launched in Haskell and Jones County.

July 3rd: Stationary front south of the target area and surface moisture provided focus for convective development. No suitable clouds in the target area.

July 4th: Scattered showers formed due to instability. Three missions launched but no suitable conditions were found.

21 hygroscopic flares and 5 glaciogenic flares were deployed during this time.
